Warehouse management for basket logistics at Montavit

Montavit has been developing and producing pharmaceutical products for 75 years, which are available in over 80 countries worldwide. For the filling of unique harmonica syringes on the Cathejell Gels production lines, ABF – together with the plant and special machine manufacturer SPS Technik GesmbH – was commissioned as the supplier of a transport control system for the design and installation of the basket manipulation. The combination of ABF control, electrical and safety technology and the OneBase®MFTintralogistics solution, the Tyrolean family-owned company Montavit ensures trouble-free and modern basket manipulation.

Our customer is now proud to operate a very well-functioning plant for manufacturing its main product, Cathejell. A key aspect for the success of such a project is the interfaces to the systems. The control system plays a particularly important role here as a communication platform. MULTIVAC supplied the equipment for blistering and packing the product. Their success story video presents the complete production process and all the equipment suppliers involved.

(The ABF control technology and the control system can be seen from 2:52).
Initial Situation
For the expansion of manufacturing, two new syringe filling lines were to be installed in a very confined space. To ensure these lines could operate reliably, a tray storage system including tray manipulation had to be designed, as the trays temporarily store the syringes in their packaging blisters and then transport them to sterilization. ABF’s scope of services included the central process areas of tray storage, tray filling, autoclaving, and tray emptying before final packaging of the finished product.
Goals and challenges
Due to the extremely limited space, it was clear that complete automation of the tray logistics was unavoidable. This constraint resulted in additional requirements for electrical planning and comprehensive, standards-compliant safety technology within a highly compact system. At the same time, material movements in the pharmaceutical environment needed to be stable, fail-safe, and completely traceable to reliably meet international pharmaceutical industry requirements.
ABF's Solution: Fully Automated Tray Logistics with OneBase®MFT

ABF implemented an automatic tray storage system including a fully automatic transport control system, also taking responsibility for control technology, electrical planning and installation, safety technology, and the CE declaration of conformity for interconnected systems in the project areas.

Tray transport via crane systems and conveyor technology is controlled fully automatically by a PLC program supplied by ABF based on Siemens S7, using modern OPC UA method calls for communication and integration.
Warehouse management and the entire transport control system run on the OneBase®MFT software developed by ABF, enabling Montavit to centrally control and transparently track tray movements.

In parallel, ABF developed and implemented a safety concept for integrating protective fences and doors, light grids, and emergency stop functions; the status of these devices can be checked at any time via the ABF visualization system.
During ongoing operation, the interplay of automation, electrical engineering, and safety design ensures that tray manipulation in a sensitive pharmaceutical process is reproducible, reliable, and auditable.

A key success factor in this project was the interfaces to the systems, with the control system playing a particularly important role as the central communication platform.
The systems for blistering and packaging the product were supplied by MULTIVAC, and the complete manufacturing process is documented in the success story video; the ABF control technology and control system can be seen from 2:52 onwards.
Result and Benefits: Stable Operation, Maximum Traceability, Minimal Resources

The implemented solution not only ensures stable and fail-safe operation of the system, but also provides completely seamless traceability.
The installed tray logistics system thus meets the high international requirements of the pharmaceutical industry with minimal space and personnel requirements, enabling modern, trouble-free tray manipulation in Montavit’s manufacturing environment.

Montavit confirms the project’s success at management level, as Managing Director Dr. Oswald Mayr emphasizes that ABF was able to contribute all the necessary competencies for the realization of this project.
